How to Talk to Your Wife About Sex Without a Fight
Bringing up sex with your wife doesn't have to end in a fight. How to pick the right moment, lead with what you want instead of a scorecard, listen, own your side and keep it calm.

Remember Groundhog Day? Bill Murray wakes up to Sonny and Cher on the clock radio every morning, and no matter what he tries, it's February 2nd in Punxsutawney all over again. That's what the sex conversation feels like in a lot of marriages. You bring it up, she gets defensive, you get frustrated, somebody sleeps facing the wall, and 3 weeks later you have the exact same fight, word for word. If you've given up on bringing it up at all because you already know how it ends, this one is for you.
So you want more intimacy in your marriage and you have no idea how to say it without it turning into a war. Most men handle this one of 2 ways. Either they say nothing and stew about it until it leaks out sideways as sarcasm, or they wait until they're rejected for the 4th time in a row and unload everything at 11 PM in bed. Neither one works, and both make her less likely to want you. The good news is that the conversation itself can be fixed, and fixing it is a lot easier than you think.
Pick the right time (hint: it's never in bed)
The worst possible moment to talk about sex is right after she turns you down. You're hurt, she feels pressured, and anything you say lands like a complaint. Same goes for when she's exhausted or when you've had a few drinks. Bring it up on neutral ground when nobody is asking for anything, like on a walk after dinner or over coffee on a Saturday morning. A calm talk on a Tuesday afternoon will get you further than a hundred heated ones at midnight.
Lead with what you want, and skip the scorecard
If the first words out of your mouth are "we haven't had sex in 6 weeks," she hears an accusation, and now she's defending herself instead of listening to you. Talk about what you miss and how you feel about her. Something like "I miss being close to you, and I want us to get that back" opens a door, while a tally of every time she said no slams it shut. I went deep on this in Your Words Are Fueling Your Sexless Marriage, because the way a man talks about the bedroom can make the problem a lot worse without him even noticing.
Ask, then actually listen
This is where most guys blow it. You asked a question, so shut up and let her answer, even if what she says stings. She might tell you she's touched out from the kids all day, that she feels like a roommate, that you only get affectionate when you want something, or that she's stressed about money and can't switch her brain off. Don't argue with it and don't explain why she's wrong. Ask her to say more… and mean it. Half the time the real reason she pulled away has nothing to do with sex at all, and you'll never hear it if you're busy defending yourself. If you want to understand what's usually going on under the surface, read why your wife stopped initiating before you sit down with her.
Own your side of it first
Know this: if you walk in pointing fingers, you're going to walk out with nothing. Before you ask her to change anything, take an honest look at yourself. Are you checked out on your phone every night, and do you only touch her when you're hoping it leads somewhere? When a man says "I know I haven't been showing up the way I should, and I'm working on it," the whole temperature of the conversation drops, and she's a lot more willing to meet you halfway. In Bro Chat #166 I wrote about 10 signs you're settling in your marriage, and it's worth checking how many of those are on you before you have this talk.
If it starts turning into a fight, slow it down
Even with the right timing and the right words, emotions can run hot on this subject. If her voice goes up, yours goes down. If you feel yourself getting defensive, say so and take a breather instead of firing back. You can always come back to it tomorrow, and walking away calm is a win compared to winning the argument and losing her. I laid out a few ways to do this in how to deescalate fights with your woman, and every one of them applies here.
One talk won't fix it
Don't expect a single conversation to flip a switch. What changes things is what you do in the weeks after you talk, like showing affection with no strings attached, helping out around the house without being asked, planning a real date and keeping your temper when she's not in the mood. She's going to watch whether you meant what you said, and if you did, the next conversation will be a lot easier than this one.
