Red Flags in a Woman Most Men Ignore
Every ex was crazy, the waiter gets the nasty version of her and she never says sorry. These are the red flags in a woman men skim past early and pay for later.

Remember Fatal Attraction? Michael Douglas has a good wife and a sweet little girl at home, and he throws it all into a blender for one weekend with Glenn Close while his wife is out of town. The thing that always gets me about that movie is that she told him exactly who she was before the weekend was even over. When he tried to go home she cut her wrists, and he patched her up, stayed the night and somehow convinced himself it would blow over. By the time the family rabbit ended up on the stove, he'd had about a dozen chances to see it coming.
Most guys aren't dealing with anything that dramatic, thank God. But the pattern is the same one I see in men all the time. The flags show up early, usually in the first few months, and we explain them away because she's gorgeous and we don't want to be the guy who overreacts. Then 3 or 4 years later we're sitting across from a buddy at a bar wondering how we got here.
I wrote back in 2019 that you get what you accept in relationships, and I learned it the hard way. I wasted so much time in so many unsatisfying and miserable relationships because I saw the warning signs and decided they weren't a big deal. So here are the ones I think men skim past the most, whether you're a few dates in or already talking about moving in together.
Every one of her exes was crazy
Listen to how she talks about the guys before you. If every single one of them was a psycho and none of it was ever even a little bit on her, your spidey-sense should be tingling. Sure, some women really have dated a string of losers. But when she can't name one thing she'd do differently, you're hearing the first draft of the story she'll be telling about you someday.
She's nice to you and nasty to the waiter
Early on, she's on her best behavior with you because she's still trying to win you over. The waiter who got her order wrong doesn't always get that version of her. If she snaps at people who can't do anything for her, pay close attention, because once the honeymoon wears off that's how she's going to talk to you too.
She never actually apologizes
Everybody screws up. What you're watching for is whether she can own it when she does. Some women will turn every argument around until you're the one saying sorry for something she started, and after a while you'll catch yourself apologizing just to get the night back to normal. A woman who can look at you and say "you're right, that was on me" is worth her weight in gold, and if you've never once heard it from her, think hard about whether you want to go decades without it.
She picks fights to see what you'll do
A little bit of testing is normal, and honestly most women do it to see if you've got a backbone. But there's a big difference between a woman who pokes at you once in a while and one who keeps the relationship in a constant state of drama because calm feels boring to her. If you're always walking on eggshells and you can't remember your last peaceful week together, that's a lifestyle you're signing up for. The guys who stick around for that usually end up in the slow motion car crash I described in the seven deadly signs of a toxic relationship.
Your money starts feeling like her money
Pro tip: watch how she handles money long before there's a ring involved. Is she racking up credit card debt she won't talk about? Does she expect you to cover everything and act insulted when you don't? I'm old school and I think a man should grab the bill on a date, but there's a line between a woman who appreciates a gentleman and one who sees you as an ATM. Money fights are one of the most common reasons marriages fall apart, and I went deeper on the warning signs in financial red flags to look for in your partner.
She slowly pulls you away from your boys
This one sneaks up on guys. At first it's a sigh when you mention poker night, then it's a fight every time you go, and a year later you realize you haven't seen your best friend since his birthday. A good woman wants you to have friends, because a man with a life of his own is a lot more attractive than one who's sitting at home waiting for her to text. If she treats your brothers like competition, that's about control, and it rarely gets better after the wedding.
What to do when you spot one
One red flag doesn't mean you bolt tomorrow. People have bad days, and nobody's perfect, you included. What matters is the pattern, so pay attention over a few months instead of a few dates and be honest with yourself about what you're seeing. Talk to her about it like a man, calmly and directly, and then watch whether anything changes. If it doesn't, you have your answer, and the worst thing you can do is stick around for years hoping she'll turn into someone else.
And if you've already walked away from one of these, don't go back. I said it in why you should never return to a toxic ex and I'll say it again: going back is the guy in the horror movie running back into the house with the chainsaw in it.
