Married but Roommates: How to Fix a Sexless Marriage

Jack Tripper spent 8 seasons of Three's Company sharing an apartment with 2 attractive women, and the whole joke was that nothing ever happened. Mr. Roper was sure something was going on, the audience knew better, and everybody laughed. That setup works great on a sitcom. It works a lot worse when it describes your marriage and you're lying in bed next to your wife wondering when the 2 of you turned into a couple of friendly people who split the electric bill.

So you get along fine. You talk about the kids and whose turn it is to take the trash out, you might even laugh together on the couch, but nobody's reaching for anybody and it's been long enough that you quit counting (or you haven't, and you know the exact number). That's a roommate marriage, and it's one of the most common ways a marriage goes sexless. Usually nobody had a big blowup to get here. The 2 of you just drifted, and a drift can be turned around if somebody decides to grab the wheel. That somebody should be you.

How you ended up here

Nobody plans this. You got married, had kids or got buried in work, and somewhere along the way the marriage turned into a logistics operation. You coordinate. You hand off the baby, you text each other about pickup times, and the only conversation after 9 PM is about what has to happen tomorrow. A couple can run a household like that for years and be pretty good at it, but nothing about it makes either one of you want to drag the other one off to the bedroom.

The phone usually plays a part too. If you both spend the last hour of the night scrolling, I already laid out why the phone in the bedroom is wrecking your marriage, and getting it off the nightstand is an easy first move.

Quit waiting for her to fix it

A lot of men in a roommate marriage are just sitting around waiting. They figure she'll come around once work calms down or the baby sleeps through the night, and meanwhile they get a little more resentful every week. Know this: the guy who sits back and keeps score usually has the exact same marriage 5 years later, only with more bitterness baked in. Back in 2019 I wrote that you get what you accept in relationships, and silently stewing over a sexless marriage while you put up with it is still accepting it.

Taking the lead starts with owning the state of the marriage, and pushing harder for sex is pretty much the opposite of that. Go back to acting like the guy she married, the one who planned things and actually paid attention to her.

Date your wife again, on purpose

When you were dating, you planned the night and you noticed what she was wearing. Most married guys quit all of that about a week after the honeymoon and then wonder where the spark went. Put a real date on the calendar this week, plan it yourself, and line up the babysitter instead of asking her to handle it. It doesn't have to cost much. A walk and a burger somewhere without the kids will get you further than a fancy dinner where you both stare at your phones.

Then do the small stuff in between. Text her something during the day that has nothing to do with groceries. Put a hand on her back when you walk by, or kiss her on your way out the door, with zero expectation attached. If every bit of affection in your house leads to you angling for sex, she'll start dodging all of it, which I got into in why your wife stopped initiating.

Have the conversation once, and keep it short

At some point you do need to say something. Pick a calm moment nowhere near the bedroom and tell her you miss her and you want more closeness in the marriage. Own your part in how it got this way. Then shut up and listen, because she probably has a few things to say about how she's been feeling, and some of it may sting.

What you can't do is turn it into a weekly negotiation with a running count of how many weeks it's been. Begging and guilt trips kill desire faster than just about anything, and I broke down why in How to Fix a Sexless Marriage Without Begging. A single honest talk followed by a few weeks of you actually acting different beats 10 talks with nothing behind them.

Take a hard look in the mirror

This part is uncomfortable, but ask yourself whether you're somebody she'd be attracted to right now. Are you taking care of your body? Are you still going after anything, or do you come home, crack a beer and disappear into the couch every night? Women are drawn to a man who has some direction and some fire in him. If you've let yourself go, getting back in the gym and getting your own life in order will do more for your marriage than any heart to heart.

If you're not sure how far things have slid, I put together 10 Signs You're Settling in Your Marriage in Bro Chat #166, and a roommate marriage checks a lot of those boxes.

When it's bigger than a rut

Sometimes the roommate thing is covering up something real, like an old fight that never got settled, a health issue or resentment that's been piling up for years. If you've put in a couple months of honest effort and nothing has moved, a good marriage counselor is worth the money, and a man who books that appointment is taking his marriage seriously.

Where to start

If you want a real plan instead of trying to figure this out alone, that's why I built Rebuild: The Dead Bedroom Fix. It walks you through owning your side of things and rebuilding the attraction at home… without the begging or the scorekeeping that got you stuck in the first place. Either way, book the date this week, since she'll notice a husband who planned something a lot faster than she'll notice a speech.
