Rules for Life

Own a Gun. Save the Most Important Lives.

If you get insurance on your house, car, or your own life, but don’t own a gun, I question your logic. Purchasing insurance gives you a guarantee that in the event of an accident, you (or your family) will be taken care of. In the event of a home invasion, can you say the same? Or are you going to let the lives of your family members hang in the balance while you wait for help to arrive?

Own a Gun. Statistically, Nobody is Coming to Save You.

The overwhelming majority of Americans (66%) purchasing firearms do so for self defense reasons.

Rasumssen Reports

Understand that a cell phone isn’t an insurance policy against a dangerous intruder. The average response time of a 9-1-1 call is twenty three minutes. Some will argue that it’s shorter, and even if that’s true, consider a ten minute scenario. By the time the police reach your home, the damage will be done. You and your family will have been robbed, attacked, raped or killed. Realistically, it doesn’t take long for someone to shoot or stab you to death. The response time of a bullet is 1400 feet per second. Which gives you a better chance of survival: the gun or the 9-1-1 call?

Even if the authorities apprehend and prosecute the criminal afterwards, you and your family still suffer the consequences, which could be dire. How would you feel knowing the criminal is serving a life sentence, but your wife and son are dead because you weren’t able to protect them? Having a firearm in your home gives you a chance to defend yourself and others in extreme situations.

If the scumbag breaking into your home is armed with a gun, you will also need a gun to stand a chance. Don’t think a bat or machete will stand up to a thug packing a 9mm pistol. If they have a knife, yes, you can fight them off using a knife or other weapons, but a gun instantly ends the conflict. Don’t “bring a knife to a gunfight.”

Safety First When You Own a Gun

Firearms are serious tools, and should always be treated with the utmost respect and caution. At home, safely secure the firearm so it can’t be accessed by children. Next, go get some training.

What good is a firearm if you can’t properly use it? Go to the local range and get some professional training. Understand how to load, reload, deal with jams, and properly handle the gun. Then, get some target practice in for good measure. Get comfortable shooting with accuracy from distances ranging from ten to fifty feet.

As a rule of thumb, you should never pull the trigger unless you’re absolutely certain that your home is under attack and you are actually being threatened. Always take every precaution to ensure a terrible accident doesn’t occur. However, it would be a mistake to let the fear of that very rare accident stop you from protecting your home and family.

Types and Use Cases

Having both a handgun and shotgun in your home are crucial, as each respectively provides different advantages. A handgun is compact, easy to handle and leaves you with a free hand, as you won’t need two to operate it. A shotgun packs a bigger punch, and it’s buckshot ammunition sprays, giving you a better chance of hitting your target. It shows a home invader you mean business and are not to be trifled with, and it’s good having options.

Accessibility

As The Secure Dad says, you don’t want to be groping around in the dark in your underwear looking for the bad guy. On top of this, make sure you have weapons accessible in most rooms of your home. The intruder isn’t going to wait for you to run back into the den to retrieve your revolver so you have a fair chance of defending yourself. Make sure you always have something hidden nearby to give you options. Additionally, ensure sure you have plenty of ammunition for each weapon so that you don’t run out of bullets. We would recommend at least three or four clips worth for each gun.

Think it can’t happen to you? Recently, a UConn student was arrested for killing a 62-year-old man and seriously injuring another man during a home invasion. In January 2020, three people (including a child) were shot and killed while sitting in their home in Newburgh county, New York during a targeted home invasion. If this doesn’t send chills down your spine, google the “Cheshire Home invasion” of 2007. In this incident, two men invaded the residence of the Petit family and murdered and raped Dr. William Petit’s wife and two daughters.

Always be ready. Remain prepared by having a plan. Never leave your fate to chance.
